Own a Private Botanic Garden oasis in sought-after Byron Bay

173 McGettigans Lane in Ewingsdale NSW is unlike anything you’ve ever seen on Domain or realestate.com.au

The property sits on an area once known as The Big Scrub. Australia’s largest expanse of lowland subtropical rainforest was cleared for agriculture during the 1880s and, by 1900, only one percent remained in the form of 100 small remnants. This is one of these priceless rainforest pockets and its yours to enjoy as a private sanctuary.

Known as Glenbrook Ewingsdale, this botanic garden has been a labour of love for the property’s owners who have preserved its biodiversity for scientific research and educational purposes. It boasts an incredible 137 native and six threatened species, roughly 1,200 Bangalow Palms and countless other endemic and native species that have been planted throughout the property.

Walk along the pebbled pathways and raised rainforest walkways and you are likely to spot the resident koala and her baby who have made themselves at home in the lush canopy. Take a seat in the rainforest and listen out for the echidnas or platypus who also call this tranquil property home. The owners have also been known to harvest blue crayfish from the freshwater creek that runs through the rainforest. It’s like your very own enchanted indigenous garden!

Preserving nature for future generations

The current owners have been working with a local organisation called SEEDTREE MAPS to create an interactive experience where you learn about the tree you are standing in front of. And all you need is your smartphone.

With the ‘Location’ setting switched on, simply walk up to a tree and select a Google Maps Pin to instantly learn its botanical name, conservation status, the type of timber and even how its best used.

Every tree, some over 100-years old, has been painstakingly documented on a plaque, providing significant cultural value for the region. It not only attracts local fauna but provides a truly unique experience as you meander along the property’s rainforest walkways, creating magical memories with your family and friends.
